January 1, 2010: Joseph Jaffe

Happy New Year! It’s 1/1/10. To some it’s the start of a new decade. I like anything that signals a fresh start.

Personally I had a great year from a work standpoint, but more importantly I got through it with a healthy family and to me, that’s the only thing that really counts.

There’s an old saying, “no one ever said on their deathbed, “I should have spent more time in the office.”” I’m fortunate that I truly love what I do, to the point at which I need to remind myself to find better balance between work and home. I guess that’s a resolution in of itself.

Today I’m in New York City. Times Square to be precise. Arguably the epi-center of the universe. The ball has dropped, the confetti cleaned up and the celebrations have subsided.

New Yorkers represent a very special group of people – they have incredible resolve, determination, optimism and hope. Last night, it was bitterly freezing, security fears were heightened after the failed Christmas Day terrorism plot (you gotta love The New York Post’s memorable headline, “Great Balls of Fire”)…but it didn’t stop a single person (or million) from lining the streets of Broadway to celebrate together.

Speaking of hope, as you reflect on the year that was and at the same time make predictions, resolutions and promises for the year to come, my hope for you is two-fold:

1.       Focus on what really counts: Friends. Family. Health. Happiness

2.       Do what you love and the rest will follow

For me, 2010 represents incredible opportunity. My third book is coming out in February, and I think it reflects the same spirit of this post – focus on what counts – the very people that keep you in business: your customers. I certainly plan to continue doing my part to “interrupt” the status quo and challenge my colleagues, clients and industry in general to obsess about innovation, building a better mousetrap and making a difference.

It’s a New Year. The slate is clean. The canvas is blank.

Get to it!
